iPhone dictation not working: fixes that help
Most iPhone dictation problems trace to one of a few causes. The microphone or speech recognition permission is denied, Full Access is off for the keyboard, the on-device speech model needs a one-time download, or you have not swiped back to the app yet. The table below matches each symptom to its fix, in the order to check them.
Dictation on iPhone depends on two permissions, microphone and speech recognition, one keyboard setting, Full Access, and a manual handoff step, the swipe back. A few different things can go wrong along the way. Most of them have a specific fix. This guide walks through the common symptoms in the order worth checking them.
Did you set up the keyboard correctly?
A handful of dictation problems trace back to a setup step that was skipped rather than a bug. In Settings, tap Keyboards, turn on Parlo, and allow Full Access. Then, in any app, touch and hold the globe key on the keyboard and choose Parlo from the list. If Parlo never appears in that list, it was not added as a keyboard in the first step. Nothing past this point will work until it is.
Is this a Parlo problem or an Apple dictation problem?
Parlo is a separate keyboard from Apple's built-in dictation button. If the standard dictation microphone on the system keyboard is not working, that is a different feature with its own settings. This guide does not cover it. This guide is about the Parlo keyboard specifically: the one you switch to with the globe key, not the mic icon on Apple's own keyboard.
Which symptom points to which fix?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard never receives dictated text | Full Access is off for Parlo | Settings, Keyboard, Keyboards, Parlo, turn on Allow Full Access |
| Mic never starts recording | Microphone permission denied | Tap Open Settings in the app, then allow the microphone |
| Mic works, nothing transcribes | Speech Recognition permission denied | Settings, Privacy and Security, Speech Recognition, allow Parlo |
| App shows a download prompt before recording | The on-device speech model is missing | Connect to the internet once, then try again |
| Text never lands after swiping back | Results expired, or you left the field | Record again, then swipe back right away |
| Globe key does not show Parlo as an option | Parlo is not enabled as a keyboard | Settings, Keyboard, Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, choose Parlo |
Check these roughly in this order. A setup problem, like Full Access being off, blocks everything below it, so fixing it first often clears symptoms that looked unrelated.
Why does Parlo ask for Full Access?
Full Access lets a keyboard extension share data with its own containing app through a private, app-specific container. Apple's developer documentation describes this as letting "the keyboard and containing app... employ a shared container." The same documentation notes that without open access, a keyboard has "no access to microphone and speaker." That is why Parlo's recording always happens in the app, never in the keyboard itself, whether or not Full Access is on. Parlo uses Full Access for exactly one purpose: handing your dictated text from the app back to the keyboard. Parlo's keyboard never links the sync stack and never talks to iCloud directly, with or without Full Access turned on.
Why does dictation say "No speech detected"?
Parlo classifies an empty capture honestly instead of saving a blank note. Nothing usable might have been recorded because you spoke too quietly, too far from the microphone, or too briefly. In any of those cases, the app shows "No speech detected" rather than inserting nothing and leaving you unsure what happened. Try again a little closer to the microphone.
Why will the keyboard not insert my text?
The keyboard inserts text only when it is on screen, in the exact field you left, with a live connection to that field. Two things break this:
- Too much time passed between recording and swiping back. Results expire, so a very delayed return means the text is gone and you need to record again.
- You switched to a different app or a different text field before swiping back. The keyboard inserts only into the field you left, never into wherever you happen to be now, and it never inserts the same result twice.
What if the microphone or speech recognition permission is denied?
Parlo requests two permissions on first launch: microphone and speech recognition. If you deny either one, Parlo cannot record or transcribe, and the app shows an Open Settings button rather than a silent failure. Tapping it takes you straight to the permission toggle. Otherwise you would have to find Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone, or Speech Recognition, on your own.
What if it asks to download something first?
The first run of transcription may need a one-time download of Apple's on-device speech model. Parlo shows "Needs a one-time download of the on-device speech model. Connect to the internet and try again." when the model is missing. This is a one-time step per device, tied to Apple's system model. It does not ask again on later recordings unless the system later removes the model and it needs fetching once more.
What should you check before reporting a bug?
- Confirm Parlo is enabled under Settings, Keyboard, Keyboards, and that Allow Full Access is on.
- Confirm the microphone and speech recognition permissions are both granted, either in the app or under Settings, Privacy and Security.
- Try a short, clear recording in a quiet room to rule out a genuinely empty capture.
- Note whether the delay between recording and swiping back was unusually long.
If dictation still does not work after these checks, reply to beta@parlokey.com with what happened, which step failed, and your iOS version. It is a beta, and reports like this are how rough edges get found and fixed.
What this guide does not fix
A wrong word in an otherwise working transcript is a different problem from dictation not working at all. This guide is about the second one. If the app records, transcribes, and inserts text but gets specific words wrong, that calls for a different fix. A custom dictionary can stop the keyboard's autocorrect from changing a name when you type it. It does not change what the speech engine hears when you dictate the same name. Speaking clearly and editing the note by hand remain the most reliable fixes for a mis-transcribed word.
What does a working session look like end to end?
When every piece is in place, the flow is short. Touch and hold the globe key, choose Parlo, and tap the mic. The Parlo app opens and records while you speak. When you stop, you swipe back to the app you were using, and the keyboard inserts the cleaned text where your cursor was. If any one step in this guide is out of place, the flow stops at that point rather than partway through. That is usually the fastest way to tell which fix you need.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Parlo say "No speech detected"?
The app recorded no usable speech, so it shows this instead of saving a blank note. Try again closer to the mic or in a quieter spot.
Why will the keyboard not insert my text after I swipe back?
Results expire after a while, and the keyboard only inserts when it is on screen in the field you left. Try recording again if too much time passed.
What does Full Access actually let Parlo do?
It lets the keyboard and the app share data through a private container. Parlo uses it only to pass your dictated text back to the keyboard.
Does denying the microphone break the whole app?
It blocks recording specifically. Parlo shows an Open Settings button so you can grant the permission without hunting through Settings by hand.
Why is Parlo asking to download something before it will transcribe?
The on-device speech model needs a one-time download on first run. Connect to the internet once, and it does not ask again unless the model is later removed.
